ABOUT OUR COACHES
Head Coach, Founder
I’ve been in fitness since 2005. I’ve got a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a Master’s degree in Education from UF (Go Gators!). I married a United States Air Force gentleman who still makes me laugh ridiculously hard. I’ve got lots of certifications and am always getting more. I love to learn. I love to read. I started CrossFit in 2011 and never turned back. I believe that CrossFit is one of the best tools in the world to help people improve their lives. My purpose is to help people live a wonderful life; my tool is fitness.
WHAT I LOVE
Coach & Co Founder
My fitness journey started at the age of 18 when I decided to enlist in the Air Force Reserve. I knew right away that I wasn’t in shape at all. This was magnified at basic training where I struggled physically. After basic training, I enrolled in school and started the Air Force ROTC program at the University of Florida with plans of becoming an Air Force Officer. Throughout my time in the reserves and in the ROTC program I struggled greatly to pass the Air Force PT test. I always passed but it was a close call every time. About a year after I graduated college (2010) I was introduced to CrossFit for the first time. A few of the people in my unit were really into CrossFit and after some coaxing, my buddy Mike finally convinced me to join him at the base gym and do CrossFit.com workouts. This is the point that I was forced to confront exactly how out of shape I was. After guessing at most of the movements for a few months I decided to join a local affiliate and learn how to actually do the movements correctly. I struggled mentally and physically. Physically I was overweight and very, very weak. Mentally I struggled with staying consistent with something that I wasn’t naturally good at and having to face different weaknesses every time I walked into the gym. After about 6 months I started to notice improvement, and it clicked to me that I wanted to devote my time and energy to this so I could have the opportunity to coach and help people overcome the same obstacles. In 2011, when Stephanie started doing CrossFit with me, is when we decided that we were going to put ourselves on a path to coach CrossFit professionally. My job in the Air Force dictated that I travel a lot which was beneficial in giving me the opportunity to see many other gyms all over the world and learn from a wide range of sources. This has greatly helped us prepare to open CrossFit SOFLA and be successful.
I love CrossFit and I love that it gives me the ability to help people reach their full potential. I am motivated and excited on a daily basis to do what I do.
WHAT I LOVE
At 20, I earned a BS in Studio Art from Florida State University (thankfully Josh & Stephanie still consented to hire me) and married my best friend. My first job as a graphic designer, logging countless hours in a chair in front of my computer, drove me to run on my lunch breaks. This led to running marathons. Distance seemed to suit me, even distance swimming. I worked in graphic design for 20 years (the last 10 as a small business owner). Now, I get to coach cool kids (with my own baby girls!) while pursuing a graduate degree in neuropsychology. Outside of CrossFit SOFLA, you can probably find me with my nose in a book.
WHAT I LOVE
I was born and raised in Brazil. When I turned 14, I started to become very active, going fishing with my dad, climbing trees, racing through the jungle at my dad’s farm, running hills with my friends, playing volleyball, horseback riding, jumping waterfalls. I loved (and still love) crazy adventures. A few years back, for various reasons, I stopped all those things I loved. It seemed as though my energy was always drained. All I seemed to do anymore was go to work, eat, and watch tv. I always found an excuse to stay home and do nothing. Then Amanda, my dear friend, introduced me to CrossFit. I reluctantly went to my first CrossFit class, but that one class was all I needed. I was hooked. The movements were just so interesting, AND the class had gymnastics components which I always loved. From that day forward, I knew that CrossFit was exactly what I needed. It was as though I became a kid again. Life became an adventure again. I decided to pursue CrossFit as a coach and took my CrossFit Level One. I began a whole new career path. I now have my SOFLA family and I get to coach awesome people to their fullest potential every day. My big goal is to be part of the CrossFit HQ coaching staff.
WHAT I LOVE
My CrossFit journey started in 2014 , sweating out my first ever winter season up in Williamsburg, Virginia, where I attended VCU to earn my BS in Chemistry. I’ve been obsessed with this sport ever since. I love coaching, and teaming up with my athletes to accomplish amazing things in and out of the box. I’ve been a dancer all my life, and attended a dance academy for much of my schooling. In my free time I do boring stuff like read books and do puzzles. You can pretty much always find me on my yoga mat, or on an adventure with my hubby.
